In Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP, what is Disk Cleanup?
Source: http://www.indiana.edu/~sakaikb/help.cgi?domain=all&docid=aimr
Disk Cleanup frees disk space by cleaning up areas that gather unneeded files. Using Disk Cleanup regularly, along with using ScanDisk and DEFRAG and keeping your virus patterns up to date, will help keep your computer running smoothly.
To run Disk Cleanup, follow the instructions below:
1. Click the Start button, and select Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and then Disk Cleanup.
Note: The Windows XP default desktop view and Start menu are different from the Windows Classic View (e.g., in Windows 2000). Therefore, navigating to certain items can be different. In the interest of broad applicability, most Knowledge Base instructions assume you are using Classic View. For information about switching your Windows XP default view to Classic View, see In Windows XP, how do I switch to the Windows Classic View, Classic theme, or Classic Control Panel?
2. Select the drive on which you would like to free up disk space (usually your C: drive), and click OK.
3. Select from the four areas that Disk Cleanup will check and clean up:
Temporary Internet Files: These are files stored on your local drive to allow web pages to load more quickly.
Downloaded Program Files: This is a storage location for programs that are downloaded when you visit specific web sites that use ActiveX and Java applets.
Recycle Bin: These are files that are marked as deleted.
Temporary Files: These are items in the TEMP folder.
For more information on what is cleaned up when you select one of these options, highlight any of the options and read the expanded information in the "Description" text box.
There are two other tabs besides the Disk Cleanup tab. They are More Options and Settings. The More Options tab includes the following:
Windows Components: This allows you to remove unused Windows components.
Installed Programs: This allows you to remove unused programs.
Drive Converter: This allows you to save space by converting to FAT32. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document What is FAT32?
The Settings tab includes a single checkbox that will allow you to set Disk Cleanup to run automatically when the computer runs low on disk space.

Right Click on your C drive, go to properties, and open the tools tab. Couple of things first it will go through and find temporary files on your hard drive and allow you to delete them. DO NOT try and compress the drive. If you need more space get a bigger drive. This will only compress your files and your drive will run slower because it has to decompress the files to use them.
Second it allows you to defragment and check your drive for problems. Fragmentation is when a file is written in multiple areas of the drive. Defragmenting puts the files back together and moves them to the front of the drive. This provides faster access and less mechanical operation. You can also remove programs here but I don't recommend this unless you know your not using this program.
