A lot of lisps are caused by a cleft palette which would need to be corrected by surgery.

Hey, its easy to get rid of a lisp. I had one as a child. Just watch what you say, and the way you say it. Kinda like getting rid of an accent. It might be hard at first because your used to talking a certain way, but it will get easier. And I hear what your saying about people associating people with lisp as being gay. I blame some television, like will and grace, with the old southern gay guy, who talks with a southern lisp. Actually there are number of gay guys who do talk like that. But if someone actually judges you based on a lisp, as to being gay or not, they are stupid.

Truthfully, you're born with that lisping sound. I have some colleagues who has lisps and has trouble pronouncing the letter R. They don't seem to notice it anymore.
But if you're conscious with the way you speak, you should consult a doctor so that he can recommend you to a speech therapist.

The 2 standard exercises I used as a child are repeating:

"She sells sea shells by the sea shore" and "Seven silver swans swim silently seaward"

The key is to stick to it, even when you feel stupid or like it's not working. It's not an overnight cure - my parents made me recite 2 or 3 times a day for at least 10 minutes at a time. If you can stand to do it longer, then do.

i had a speach impediment when i was a kid and it was really hard to overcome. the best thing you can do is take a second and think before you say things, then say them the way you want to without a lisp, slower. while this is a pain, its the only real efective way of gettin rid of it.

I had a lisp growing up. See an orthodontist, it often has alot to do with how your teeth and tounge interact. That solved my problem... and now i have straight teeth!

Once I heard a doctor explaining a kid to do singing
lessens, it really helps.
always try singing when there is a song on the radio.
yap you should force out of it, or else people start
making jokes about you.
its never to late, even your kids can inherit.
it would be much better to do in child hood.

That is what certified speech therapists do ... they are clinically trained to assist with this sort of thing. Ask your school psychologist or dentist for a referral or check the yellow pages.

You just have to get used to speaking with whatever device I'm guessing you just got put in your mouth. Talk as much as you can - while cleaning, running, driving. To yourself or to others. You have to get used to talking with this new device.

If it isn't a new device in your mouth, you should probably get speech lessons.
