The Bob haircut became popular in the "roaring 20's" when the flapper fashion appeared. It was considered to be outrageous at the time, since up until then long hair had been the main style. When skirts and dresses became short, so did hair! It's true that hairstyles follow fashion.

I heard somewhere that before the bob came around in the 20s - women generally never cut their hair (see gibson girls with their buns etc)
Apparently, the first bob hairstyles date back to the Egyptians. The chin length bob became very popular in the twenties.
Vidal Sassoon made it popular again. He created a short, angular hairstyle cut on a horizontal plane and recreated the more stylish classic "bob" haircut. It was way MOD & way cool. :)

The bob haircut was created in 1909 by a hairdresser named Antoine. He was inspired by paintings of Joan of Arc.
By the end of the WWI, the cut became popular among the bohemian crowd known as the Bloomsbury circle in Britain.
In the 1920's young women called flappers rebelled against the conservative style of the day by cutting their hair short into a bob haircut.

From wikipedia:
It was invented in 1909 in Paris by the hairdresser Antoine, who was inspired by "Joan of Arc." In Britain it became popular in "Bloomsbury" circles before the end of the First World War, but was made widely popular in the 1920s by flappers. At the time it was considered a sign of a liberated woman. In 1924 the razor cut shingle bob was introduced.

The bob haircut came from the 1920's. When the style first came out my great grandmother got her hair cut like that. Allot of the flapper girls wore the hair style. You can read more about it on line.

Once upon a time there was a girl named Bobisha, but she hated her name, so she was known as Bob. One day she cut her hair short and it looked really cute, so it became known as the Bob. Whenever people wanted it, they would say, "I want a Bob" and now she is forever molded into history.

Probably Mary Tyler Moore. Dorothy Hamill's hair cut style was called "the wedge". Both cute cuts. Maybe they will make a comeback?

They became really popular in 1920's as a protest of the long hair and enveloping clothing of the 1800's. Before and after that, I don't know.
