I bought two new 6x9's that sound pretty good when I set the fade more towards the back of the car. The problem is when I get a new sub in the back, setting the fade will drown out the front speakers. Without using an amp on the 6x9's how could I balance it so more power goes to the 6x9's but at the same time does not increase the volume on the sub?

Hope that makes sense.

Your problem only occurs if you use rear pre-outs for the subwoofer signal. If you get a head unit with a subwoofer pre-out, it won't be affected by the fade controls.

If you don't have a subwoofer pre-out or "non-fader" output, there's no practical way to adjust the fader control without changing the subwoofer volume.

First of all, the way to tell if you have a good caraudio system. is to close your eyes and to hear the music as if it is coming from in front of you. Like that other dude said, if it has a subwoofer pre-out (which almost any CD player does that isn't 50$) then the fader will not affect it. But you have a concern for something that you shouldn't be concerned about which is rear-fill (aka your back speakers). Back speakers are bigger, and they are louder then front speakers but there are bad things about them:

Having them up high enough to hear over the bass, means the tweeters and highs for anyone in the backseat is going to literally hurt their ears. Also, you probably don't mind the music mainly coming from the back, beacuse you've never heard a great system. I used to have an amp running to just my rear speakers (because they're bigger, louder, and can handle more power) But once I bought nice fronts, and amped those up, the difference was incredible. I never knew how much I was missing out on by having the rear speakers give me most of my vocals and highs. I'm telling you, if you want it to sound amazing, get nice front speakers and set the fader 2 or 3 to the front.

Get nice fronts, and set the fader until the fronts are just the exact same and it sounds like the music is coming from all around you.

I'm not so sure if the Fade also includes the the subwoofer. But if it does, you can always turn the gain and bass boost down on your subwoofer amp.
