I adopted a Black Lab (Diego) yesterday. He is 2 y/o, and neutered. Every time he sniffs my Maltese (Tramp) in her privates, he whines like he is in pain or just very sad. Tramp is 8 months old, and is unaltered. I also have a 3 y/o Siberian husky (Lady) who is spayed. When Diego sniffs Lady, he doesn't whine at all. Does anyone know why he does this? This is my first male dog, so I don't know if this is a normal thing. Please, serious answers only. Thanks.

Tramp has not been in heat yet. And I gave her a bath last night.

Probably due to the fact that Tramp is unaltered and can tell that by smellin her scent or if she's in heat. That's all it would sound like to me.

Dogs will do this when they are excited about something. Is Tramp spayed? If not, that could be the cause.

maltese give off a distinct odor when wet or in heat, i have a black lab myself, they are retrievers and have a great sense of smell even in the water, its probably just your lab smelling something on the maltese, most likely foreign. my suggestion would be to give the dog a bath then see how your lab reacts

The Black Lab COULD HAVE received some sort of trauma as a puppy(??) that reminds him when sniffing your Maltese.
Yes...... K9's can be quite a "unique" bunch.

the whining means the dogs are just getting used to each other, as long as they get along dont worry
