Hello guys, a couple of weeks ago, driving on the freeway, my car started feeling a little funny, the RPM went crazy up and down, finally coming down to a full stall. I took it to a mechanic, who check the fuel pressure and said it was the fuel pump. Well, I replaced it and ran ok for two weeks, today it did it again. there was no check engine light on again, so I am frustrated about the situation. Does enyone have any idea of what can be wrong? Thanks for your help

If your mechanic installed an after market fuel pump there is a good chance it is the pump again if his diagnosis was correct the first time and if it ran for 2 weeks I would be inclined to believe he was right. I am not pushing Ford parts here, I am slamming aftermarket ones, our shop policy on fuel pumps is that we either install OEM pumps, whatever make the vehicle is or we don't guarantee the repair, we were burned too many times with replacement pumps that didn't last or ran worse than with the one we were replacing. Also make sure he replace the fuel filter when he did the pump, a lot of dummies out there don't.

The Fuel Filter should also be replaced every 50k miles. A clogged Fuel Filter will drastically reduce the flow from the fuel pump and wear it out much quicker. A new pump is pointless if it can't move fuel to the engine.

A good way to test to see if your fuel pump is working is to have someone turn the ignition of your car to on, but do not crank. While doing this, squat down by the rear of your car and you can hear the pump kick on when they turn the key to on. Have them turn the key on, wait a few seconds, then to off, pause, then back to on again, to be able to listen to the pump. It should sound like a 'strong' whining noise.

Also, bad spark plug wires and plugs themselves can cause rough idle in your vehicle. Plugs and wires need to be replaced every 100k miles.

Another tip could be that your check engine light blub is burned out, or could be removed if you bought your car from a corner lot. To check this, turn the key to the on position, but don't crank it. The lights on the dash cluster will light up and flash to show they all work. If your check engine light doesn't come on then, either the bulb is burned out or missing. If it's missing or burned out, take your car to a local Auto Zone. They will scan the computer free of charge and tell you what's wrong with it and how much the part cost. That way when you go to get it fixed you know wether your being ripped off or not.

just about any independent shop will give you a free estimate. otherwise you could fork out about 60 to 80 dollars to buy your own diagnostic tester. The check engine light could be one of a hundred things. Better get it checked sooner rather than later before it turns into something worse.

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter along the inside frame rail on the driverside? Sounds like classic dirty fuel filter to me....George
