I play the piano pretty well but I also want to play guitar. So how much time will it take me to be a fairly good guitar player and be able to play rock music.

It took me about 3 months to learn the basics and about after a year I could play well enough to play along with contemporary radio rock. Now 4 years later and I'm better than my friend who has been playing for about 8 years. Just keep practicing. There came many times when I thought to myself, "this is just too hard, I can't get my fingers in this position, or i just can't play that fast." A lot of it is muscle memory and speed, start of slow and work up the pace.

This depends on a lot of things, piano is a lot different than guitar you need callouses for guitar, not for piano, you also need a great deal of strength, especially with Barr cords, have you tried an F cord yet, have much trouble. When you say how much time does it take that depends on you, some children on piano can hear a piece once and play it back, Jacquline du Pre was a child prodigy she could hear a concerto and in a day or to play it back note for note from memory at fifteen. John Williams the same way, Liona Boyd the great classical guitarist could also do amazing things in her twenties, today I think she plays the best tremolo in the world. Most of the normal people who play guitar have to put in years of study, unless they are exceptionally talented, or if they have perfect pitch. Then you have your people like Slash who doesn't even read music and seems to be able to play anything. So no one can tell you how long it would take you to be a fairly good guitarist, it depends on the individual.

It depends what you mean by "fairly good", but just using the term loosely, I will say you can get fairly good in 3-6 months.

But, the most important thing is how much you practice, and how well you practice. Someone who practices badly and practices rarely, for, say, over 30 year period, would be terrible. Someone who practices efficiently and regularly, say; 12 hours a day, can get really good in a relatively short period of time.

If you are practicing effectively 8 hours a day or more, it is possible to have the ability to play Joe Satriani songs, Yngwie Malmsteen songs, etc. well, after 2 years and possibly even 1 year of playing.

Good luck! Also check out guitarprinciples.com

guitar is pretty easy. just make sure you practice on a regular basis. if you're good at piano guitar shouldnt be too hard. you obviously have background in music so you will be able to pick up the techniques fairly quickly. as for a set amount of time..it really depends on the person

Okay, as I'm sure you can see as a piano player, the guy that said it takes a long time to learn this was kidding, that's not real music. But depending on what you want to learn, it takes anywhere from a few months to years, but basic rock is about a year.
