You should be concerned. Ticks spread infectious diseases if they are attached long enough to transmit disease (24-48 hours). If a bulls eye appears at the site of attachment call your childrens doctor.
Fortunately for our pets we can prevent transmission of these diseases by using frontline plus or a preventic collar.
Make tick checks part of your daily routine with your children and your pet.

You really shouldn't be concerned over 1 tick. I live in Southern Illinois in the country and my dogs get ticks on them everyday. I use Frontline Plus to kill the ticks and 2 of my dogs have tested positive for a tick disease but it was treated easily with medication.
As for your children keep an eye on the site of the tick bite. Lyme disease is rare but if your children get a bulls eye rash around the tick bite you need to take them to the doctor immediately. I can tell you I've been bit by about 20 ticks this summer alone and I'm just fine. My dogs (all 4 of them) have been bit countless times as well and they are also fine.
Yes, they do carry diseases but as long as you take your dog (and children) to their yearly doctor's visits for blood work ect everyone will be okay.

Might want to have a pest control company come out and give your yard a good once over with their spray--at least in the summer months. Deer ticks, I believe, can transmit Lyme Disease to humans so you want to get them out of your yard if you have ticks. I'm not sure Deer ticks are what you have but it's better to be safe about it.
Also if your children are near any wooded areas either keep them out of that area or make sure they wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible (long pants, long sleeve shirts, etc) when they go there. Have them tuck the legs of their pants into their socks too if they go into wooded areas. Ticks don't jump or fly so the only way they can get onto you is through direct contact and since they generally live in tall grass and wooded areas it's best to keep your skin covered if you go anywhere that ticks are likely to be.
Good luck!

Very. Some or most ticks carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or Lyme Disease, which is a very serious condition. If they show signs of infection or something strange around where the tick was take them to the doctor immediately

Not neccesarily for concern. I live in the woods in the appalachian mountains and my brother and I used to play in them. We would come in an always have ticks on us. Nothing ever came of it though. My dad just put them in Alchole after he pulled them off or flushed them. I would just make sure to pull it off. My brother had one when he was little that had burrowed behind his ear that my parents missed when they checked us. They called our pediatrician and he said pull it out, if any problems result call, but wasen't overly concerned. Just check them over real good and keep an eye on the spot you pulled it off. If your real worried phone the pediatrician tomorrow. :)

I would be concerned and I would invest in a GOOD tick collar that you could buy at your Vets. Please check your daughters daily for ticks. Ticks can carry very bad diseases, one of my friends is on disablity because of Lymes disease that went to her brain. Very sad.

If I were you I would ask the lawn and garden center if they have anything you can treat your yard with to eliminate them. They can be pesky little critters, for sure.
