You will want to find an amp that is rated the same as your sub's RMS and at stable ohms for your sub. If you have a 800 watt PEAK power, and you have an amp that is pushing 800 watts RMS, then you will be over powering your subs. You'll blow your sub in a heartbeat.
Also, if you have a 800 watt RMS sub that is a 4 Ohm DVC, then you need to find an amp that you can wire accordingly. Remember, wiring a sub down to the right ohms is also going to play a huge role into buying your amp.
For example, if your sub is rated 800W rms at 4 ohms DVC, then you will probably end up wiring your subs down to 2 ohms.
Meaning, you'll need to find an Monoblock 800 watt x 1 @ 2 ohms amplifier.
Here is a wiring diagram to help you out.

It is possible to underpower a sub, but it's unlikely, and very hard to do. You would be completely fine in your situation. As was said before, you'll just never reach it's full potential, but it will still work. About the person who said compare rms ratings, not watts..... They're an idiot. rms ratings are watts--that's power's si unit. I think is what they meant to say is compare rms power ratings instead of MAX power ratings. You'll better match your system that way. And I'm not sure how the other person can tell you it will be 6dB less. Drivers vary, and so do their characteristics. They wouldn't be able to tell you that without knowing your amp, and your sub. You will lose dB yes, but to say that it will be 6 is probably wrong. It could be 2 dB, it could be 15 dB. Something else to consider is this. Say you have your 800 watt woofer, and you have two amps. One amp is 200 watts, the other is 1000 watts. Your 200 watt amp working at 100% capacity will have more distortion than the 1000 watt amp working at 20% capacity (200 watts). If you overpower a sub, you can blow it yes, but if you have an amp that has more power than the sub it has to work less hard to achieve the same amount of power/volume that the lower power amp would. There will be considerably less distortion. But all in all, your setup will work.

I had plenty of systems installed in the past and is been my experience that for a 800 watt subwoofer an amp that is at least 500 watts and above should do the trick. Keep in mind you should try to get a good brand amp, don't settle for "fancy/chrome-looking" amps, those are trash (some). Remember you get what you pay for.

your going to want to get an amp that is rated at the same rms rating as the sub...the sub is 800watts max and 400 watts rms(continuos power) so you would want to get something at 400 watts rms or just below. A good amp would be the Pionneer GM7300T which is a monoblock and is rated for around 325watts rms at 4 ohms. I have this amp pushing two 12" kicker comp vrs and it sounds great. Kicker also has a great amp lineup but can be expensive but you wont be dissapointed. Its all up to you an how you like your music to sound.....good luck

you always want use amp that has the same watt rating that your subs are.
in your case, if your subs are 800 watts a piece then you would want to use a1600 watt amp.
this has always been the rule of thumb. but you can get by with maybe 1200 watt amp.
becareful in what amp you choose because some amps are underated in power.

you probably need to check out the specs on the particular sub you got there, look on the net for the brand and technical info.
I reckon you would need a good amp pushing somewhere in excess of 150-200RMS minimum to drive that sub anywhere near its potential.
Remember it is not the amount of watts you putting into the driver but the quality, sometimes you can put a massive amount of power into a speaker without blowing it up as long as it is good clear signal.
