I heard that if the war doesn't stop soon enough, the US will start drafting people. Does anyone know if this is true or likely to happen?

The only way there will be another draft is if the United States is overwhelmed with some kind of aggression from another country, say China for example.

We don't want and don't need to draft people to deal with these wars we have going on right now. We want volunteers only.

There is always some idiot politician that thinks it would be a good idea, but there is no public support for it, so don't worry.

Will not happen. The infrastructure needed to maintain a draft is hardly existent. Also bear in mind the size of the armed forces is limited by US law, and an army is maintained only at authorized levels. The current authorized levels are being maintained with a volunteer force. There is no serious chance a draft will happen, as it has NOT been asked for by the armed forces, or the President. The ONLY ones to ask for a draft have been certain Democratic Congressmen who maintain the military recruits disproportionately from minorities and disenfranchised youth, and sought a draft as a supposed means of correcting this. It's all BS, and the bill died rather quickly.

The Democrats keep passing word around about the Draft being reinstated.... They're the ONLY ones talking about it. We have plenty of volunteers in the military to cover our current personnel maximums... So, no... there isn't going to be a draft anytime soon... The Republican's aren't even considering one... and the Democrats are only talking about it to scare people who don't know any better into voting a democratic presidential ticket...

The Democrats are just trying to scare other people into voting for them. Enforcing the draft would be political suicide, and the Armed Forces are also not large enough.

Like xjosiey, I think that the only time there would be a draft would be if the US were to be invaded. But who would be stupid enough to do that?

honestly, the government would have to be insane to reinstate the draft. there would be utter and complete chaos in this country and mass protesting, and im sure our elected officials do not want ot deal with that. besides- drafting people would lower the morale or the military. the reason we are so strong is because everyone that is there has joined on free will and knew exactly what they were getting into and actually wants to be there (fort he most part).

The only ones calling for a draft are the democratic party.

Nope, it was issued that a draft never be instated in a time of war, after issues with Vietnam.

No. There is not a draft in the near or distant future.

unlikely

a draft would bring a level of dissent which would topple Bush's presidency and anyone else who tried to implement it
