Depending on the vehicle, you can buy or make a computer mount, or you may be able to mount the computer on a flat surface in the vehicle with Velcro strips. A lot depends on the size of your laptop!

You will need a power inverter, or a 12 volt power cord. You can buy an inverter at most stores, even Wal Mart. Some can plug right into the lighter, some need to be hard wired!

I use a Garmin 18 GPS with my laptop all the time. Depending on the vehicle I am driving, I either mount the laptop, or let it sit on the passenger seat!.

If you have a cd deck with a aux input then its really easy. If not you can purchase a aux input adapter. I have a deck with aux input and hooked my laptop straight to it. Sounds nice, and much more capable than an ipod!

I also ripped out the passenger airbag and put in a simple hydraulic to swing open the flap. It provides a simple way to conceal wires and to keep the laptop safe. Although this is a cavalier and the passenger airbag already had a plastic flap that was the perfect size. This way it is pretty impossible to tell from the outside that there is a hidden laptop.

Other than that you also need a power inverter. I mounted mine inside to the right of the laptop "hole" out of view but easily accessible.

So you check list is..

Power inverter

Deck with aux input (or aux adapter)

some way to conceal or lock the laptop

trust me if you do not conceal it, someone will not hesitate to break a window for it!

Isn't placing a laptop in your car inviting theft? I would rather just get a GPS system, it's smaller (just the size of a PDA).
