Most certainly, YES you should adopt your dog/pup from a rescue or animal shelter. When you go to the shelter/ adoption event, you'll get to speak with the volunteers/foster "parents." These individuals can help you find the right dog. Plus, you will have the opportunity to give the dog a "test walk" to see how he/she works for you. Remember that each dog is different, coming from different backgrounds, so it's hard to say whether you'll have it extra easy or a little rough in the beginning. Any dog that you bring into your home, there will be some adjustment time. Now, a pup coming from a reputable breeder may have it a little easier than a rescue dog...but for very good reason. A dog from the breeder will most likely cost you a fortune, while a rescue dog will cost minimal...AND if the dog isn't already spayed/neutered, you'll most likely get some kind of huge discount for the procedure. My S-I-L adopted her lab mix as a pup. They went through a short "rough period," but the crate training helped tremendously (they had the puppy on free roam all day, and dog pooped and peed everywhere! That stopped when I strongly suggested proper crate training...they were happy they did it) I adopted my German Shephard from a breed specific rescue organization. I knew that I was going to have it rough with this particular puppy because he was emaciated, wormier than ever, and he wouldn't eat or poop in front of me. It took a good $500 in vet bills and 5 months to get my new puppy settled...but it was all very much worth it. After my experience, I swear, I will NEVER buy a dog again. I will always adopt from a rescue or shelter!!!! Because both my S-I-L and I adopted our dogs as pups, we were able to properly socialize them at the perfect age. They are very social animals. Good for you! You will feel like you're doing the right thing! I

This really depends on the shelter. Give them a call - they should be able to tell you. However, I adopted a dog from the Humane Society about a month ago and the poor dog had been picked up by the dog catcher and never claimed. Needless to say there were no records. I took him the vet before I brought him home and had the vet give him all his shots.
When you adopt the dog, even if it does have shots, you need to take it to the vet and have it tested for heartworms (blood work) and other worms (stool sample).
Please make sure you get him/her neutered/spayed too.
And good for you for going to the Humane Society!!!

They usually do. When I adopted mine, I paid $50 fee, but he had had all his shots and was set for a year.
You're a hero to rescue one from the shelter rather than just going for a breeder!!!
