I went past a church the other day that had this sign...
TGIF
Thank God I'm forgiven....are you?
As a Christian, I'm not really comfortable with something that sounds like bragging in terms of forgiveness, but I want to know your opinion?
Would you attend a church with that type of a sign in front of it?

sweethang, please understand that I don't think that the name or type of church should be posted

The (I'm) in it is very selfish, something God isn't. I would rather look at it like this....."Totally, God is Forgiving."

I don't think it's a big deal. A bit gimmicky, but that's a learning techique used often today. A church that broadcasts Thank God I'm Forgiven, is better than a church full of guilt ridden solemn members who have to wrestle for peace and joy everyday. You can not even say TGIF without lifting up the name of Jesus, so let Christ be praised. Amen.

That sign can be looked at in more than one way. It's one way of saying "I'm saved, are you". Same difference, means the same thing and it's the truth and churches are supposed to be about truth. If you think that's a slap in the face then wait until the judgment day, that's when people find out just how much they've been walking on the truth. The sign would possibly offend those people who have their own personal Jesus and their own brand of church but , personally, I don't find it offensive.

The church (or person doing the sign) is thanking God.
God is the one who forgives. We are the ones who ask and accept His forgiveness.
There is no bragging intended in the sign, unless they are bragging on God, the forgiver.
There is nothing self-righteous about it. Righteousness (like forgiveness is a result of being in right relationship with God)

I think there must be a book out with church signs. Over the last few years, they have been getting catchier. They usually bring a smile or chuckle.
What is on the sign is not nearly as important as the message inside though. Usually it is very watered down spiritual food without the meat we need.

I didn't think it sounded like bragging. It would be different if it said, "Yay me, I'm forgiven." The credit goes to Whom it belongs.
It would be like saying "I saved over $300 on my car insurance... have you?" It's a testimonial that encourages others to try the good thing you yourself are so fortunate to have. I would certainly consider attending the church; at least, if I didn't attend, it wouldn't be over the sign, although I have seen more effective, more clever sign wordings.

So who's bragging. The Secretary. The custodian. The pastor. The church. It's a sign to make you think. What's wrong with that.

sounds good to me. That church is grateful of Gods forgiveness. If you dont have His forgiveness then im sure it might be offensive because your playing with your soul in not doing something simple.

It is advertising. If instead of a church it was a fast-food restaurant, the sign might say "Have it your way". You wouldn't object to that, would you? Different product. That's all.

I don't think that it was intended as bragging. I think that it was someones idea of trying to present the gospel message using humor, so that it wouldn't sound so threatening. Apparently it didn't work, because you didn't think that it was funny. I assume that they tried their best.
