I was attending basic in Great Lakes,IL when I was removed from my division and placed in the VA hospital. I was reported as having 'night terrors' but personnally don't remember having them. At the VA hospital I was diagnosed with depression and a thyroid defeciency. The military liasion said I was receiving a general discharge (which isn't honorable or dishonorable) with an RE-4 code. I was told by HM2 that I would be able to re-enlist in one year from my enlistment date. Now that I'm back home, friends who are in the military tell me an RE-4 is bad news. That I won't be re-enlist no matter what, esp. with the 'depression' on my record and that a recruiter won't even take time to try and upgrade my code. Is this true? What does an RE-4 really mean and will I ever be able to re-enlist ?=*(

RE4 means 'not even a chance' of reenlistment.

It's followed by a letter which defines why not.

It looks like a solid no.
RE-4 - Individuals separated from last period of service with a nonwaiverable disqualification (refer to AR 601-280). Ineligible for enlistment except as provided for in paragraphs 2-7c and 2-7d. (See waiverable moral and administrative disqualifications.) Disqualilication is nonwaivable.

Unless you can get the RE-4 upgraded you will not be enlisted in any branch of service in the U.S. If at the end of a WestPac you were still E-4 as a Sub NUC you had more problems than you indicated in this question.

the only branch that MIGHT( and i stress MIGHT) be willing to grant you a waiver after the 12 months are up is the National Guard. with an RE4, your chances of getting into the navy again are Nil, as well as the Air Force.

But you will have to prove that the depression and the thyroid condition no longer exist or pose any chance of recurrance.

An RE-4 in the Navy translates to "not recommended for reenlistment."
Chances are you will never be able to reenlist in any branch unless you can get the code changed on your DD-214.

I believe an RE-4 means you cannot re-enlist ever, for any reason.

Without reading your long and un-interesting story RE4 is permanently disqualified from military service forever.
