They were pagans and they worshiped idols like their ancestors. They would construct idols out of everyday items and then worship them until Prophet Muhammad was sent the revelation of Islam which started setting the people straight. It told them to worship one God and to do good in this like so they may enter paradise and avoid hell in the hereafter.

Muhammad also adopted the moon as a symbol in order to appease a tribe he was assimilating into his own religion, who worshipped the moon goddess.

I don't know that it actually had a name. It was just a mishmash of several (about 900) gods. They were sitting around worshiping rocks that had fallen in a huge meteor shower.
