Most commonly the dog either has impacted anal glands or worms. Anal glands are easily and quickly released by the vet in a few seconds. If the dog has not been wormed recently that may also be the cause.

Dog's have scent marking glands located on either side of their anus called anal glands. These have a nasty smelly fluid that sometimes does not excrete when they poop. This fluid can build up and become uncomfortable for the dog. They drag their butts to try to get the fluid out.

If your dog is doing this talk to your vet or go to a groomer they can take care of it for you.

They do this because they can't just reach back there and start scratching, because they are 4 legged animals, and their paws don't have the ability to reach back that far, so they often rub against the floor or ground to stop itches and sometimes for pleasure. . . .

it is their anal glands. they need to be expressed, it is nasy as hell, you basically get a few paper towels and squeeze its little a hole and this brown juice crap squirts out. if you dont do it, he will do it for you, on your carpet, or they can even squirt out when the dog gets excited or barks, and you really dont want that.
think of it this way, you know those glands that skunks have by thir ***? well, dogs have em too, but they are used for marking thier territory, and obvioulsly the skinks anal glands are on steroids, where the dogs are less pronounced.

so every couple of months, or every time you see him wipin *** on your carpet, you gotta goose em and squeze that crap out, but dont squeeze to hard, you can hurt em.

good luck

Sometimes it's just a bit of poop stuck on their butt. My dog has tons of fur so I have to keep him trimmed around that area. Otherwise he'll get it stuck in his fur and then he'll do that whole dragging his butt on the floor thing!

that usually means they have worms or just an itchy butt u should take a stool sample to the vet and ask to have it checked for worms, they can be pretty scary.
