I am 14 and i am attached to a long-haired dachshund. I have a dog that is going to get knee surgery in a month. My mom says yes but my dad says no. He just says why do we need another dog. I told him we didn't need my sister but we kept her. Then he said it would be bad for my dog getting surgery. She is a part of every sport dog imagineable so i am sure she will bounce right back up after her surgery. It is a minutare so it'll only get around 11 lbs. My mom is attached to him to but is afraid to make my dad mad.
Please don't say show him i am responseible because i don't have time the dog might be gone.
Thanks

Well, you could persuade your dad by making a list of pros and cons as to why it would be good to get that dog. However, you never know about your dog with the surgery, it might take some time before your dog can fully exercise and play. But, there are some hardships with your parents too. If you get that dog, they will have to pay a lot for it and also they will have to buy extra food and necessities for it. It also involves extra time sacrifice from your family to care for that dog. Just consider that, and then think about the dog, unless you are in a different case. If you still want the dog, just make that pro and con list.

I honestly don't think its a good time for you to get a new dog. Your dog is having surgery and you and your family will have be there for it. And whether you like to admit it or not, if you get a new puppy most of your attention will be pulled towards the new puppy. I completely understand that the dog might not be there after your dogs surgery but there will be other dogs. And your dog might end up heartbroken if he/she realizes that you got a new puppy not only during his surgery but at anytime would hurt him. Dogs are very loyal and it does break their hearts if they think you are more attatched to one dog than the other. I would only buy/adopt a dog after your dogs surgery but you have to make sure you pay attention to your dog you have now too. Dogs are very fragile and can't stand not being loved.
Also there is no sure way of telling if your dog is just going to "bounce back" or not. Something could go wrong and something might not go wrong. Its never a sure thing. Thats why you need to wait.

you didn't win any points with your Father saying that part about your sister. Be extra nice to your Dad and ask to talk to him and say how much you and your mother already love the dog. Ask him what you could do to change his mind. And don't get smart mouth with him listen. If you act like a typical 14 year old you'll lose. And don't argue with your Dad because thats disrespectful and you will surely lose the dog. Its weird your Mother is afraid of making your Dad mad. Ask her to fix his favorite dinner.

I think the comment about your sister ruined your chances.
Don't take a kid-like approach to this, be mature. Explain to him why you want the dog, and explain to him how much it means to you. If you can, find out why he says no and try to fix it. Get your mom involved, and remember be mature!
