It could just be that he's getting old and picky. Try to clean the litterbox more often, or give him an extra litter box to go in.
Don't listen to the person who said to use bleach to clean the floor - that has the wrong kind of smell to a cat. Use vinegar to clean the floor - that will neutralize the odor somewhat, and hopefully that will work. Also, maybe pull the litterbox forward a bit to cover where he's been going.
Have youtaken him to a vet to get checked for a UTI? That is always a possibility, too, and you should rule that out first! Sometimes with urinary tract infections, cats will pee somewhere else, thinking that it will hurt less.

Try cleaning the floor around the litter box with bleach. Sometimes a cat can smell something it doesn't like and it will refuse to go in the litter box. You can also try getting a new litter box and see it that helps. There might be smells in the old one that are repelling him from the box. Other than that, he might just be getting old. Talk to your vet and see if the vet has any suggestions.

If you move the litter box they will pee where it use to be. So make sure when you change the box you place it exactly where it was.

does he have arthuritis, maybe it hurts him to step into the litterbox
or, maybe he has a cut on his paw and the litter hurts it
Or, did you get a different type of litter, some cats will only use one type of litter and if you switch it, the cat wont use the litterbox anymore
Another thing could be, did you go out of town and leave your cat at home, he might be getting you back for leaving you (my cat would bite me while i was sleepin when we went out of town and left her alone)

That is usually one of the first signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI). It is painful to urinate, so they associate the box with pain. Time for a vet visit to rule it out! If all is normal, they can discuss behavior with you.
