Its kinda ironic that only a few mormons answered this question. Only those who disagree with the mormons have answered so far. Here is what I have.
Ok that is mainly true. But the real reason it started and stoped was by Commandments of God. That is all that Matters. For those that believe that the heavens are closed this concept could be very hard to be understood. But the heavens are not closed.
As for polygamy in the celestial kingdom. That is not true. We firmly believe that we will be sealed to the first wife. The other wifes will have a chance in the Millinium to be married along with all of those that died when they were young and those that were never married in this life and those that were mentally ill in this life.
Machine Header. Did you ever think that God may have actually spoken to this boy? Or are you to happy with your sinful life to open your mind. Your comment was rude and uncalled for and I think that you should delete your answer and do some serious one on one with God!
Kelly ~ It is not a matter of one being a mormon or not it is about ones personal relationship with Christ. There is an equation that all mormons aply to there lives whether they know it or not. (____ + Me = Closer to God)
If this statement is true we will persue the relationship, activity or what ever.
Indeepthought ~ Are you saying that the prophets of the old testament were evil?

Men in many societies can have all the wifes and children they can support. In the bible it says that if a man's brother dies the brother should take his brother's widow. Family values you would want the nieces and nephews to be raised in the family and the widows not to starve. Women only have one husband so they will know who the babies daddy is. Biologically it makes sense that the strongest males have more mates. The elk and deer only have one male for breding and entire herd. Women aren't willing to be property of the men and would rather have our individual men than share the strongest. Also all those men who don't get a wife because other men have several would rebel.

your bf is full of $h!t . The mormons practice of polygamy is based on the fact tha tthe bible does allow for it. It is practiced in the old testament. I would respect him more if he was honest instead of giving you a load of crap. the mormons were in Utah, which was not even a state then, let alone involved in the civil war.

That seems to be reasonable speculation. The following web page describes the Church's official and probably more accurate understanding of the history of this doctrine.

I think that some men wanted to get away with having more than one wife. They also wanted younger wives and wanted to be lord and master.
This religion afforded them the opportunity to do that and still be respectable and say it is my religion.
Most old men would like to buy a young virgin girl to play with.
they just haven't figured out how to do it without going to jail.
So these religions were started that allowed them to do that.
These men come up with all sorts of bogus ideas about how wonderful it is for women. Trust me it is not women they are thinking of.

How about WOMEN... that take care of Themselves....?
Joe Smith... used this verse Also!
(Isaiah 4:1) And in that day = = seven women = = shall take hold of = one man, = saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
Thanks, RR

I think that makes good sense as the origin point for polygamy.
That is in the Torah, anyway, that you can take as your wife the widow of a relative who died.

When the Mormon Church gets honest about all the wives - people might start listening to what they have to say. When they see females as intelligent, feeling human beings and not man's slaves, will there be progression?

Come on! What better way to spice up your marriage than pop some mushrooms and talk to god! Why else would he want to create a religion? Why do you think it was never rescinded during his lifetime, but only when Utah applied for statehood? Mormons are so buried in their own sh*t!

he will be encouraged to end his relationship with you eventually if you do not become Mormon. i've seen it happen to my friends. anyways, that excuse about their being more women than available husbands is absurd. they think it's part of their plan of salvation and although it isn't practiced here, polygamy will be practiced in the afterlife. i think Joseph Smith "prophesied" polygamy to fulfill his own sexual desires. he himself had several wives.
