When I was growing up I went to CCD classes and Purgatory and Limbo were taught to us authoritatively. No my understanding is that these two places in the afterlife are not part of Catholic teachings, and some are claiming that they were never taught as doctrine. What is the current status of Limbo & Purgatory.

If Limbo was never a doctrine, why was it taught authoritatively in CCD classes back in the 60's ?

I got the "heads up" to extend the qeustion, but there were so many good answers, that I am going to let it go to a vote, and thanks to all who answered. However, I would like to add, that I suspect that there has been some back peddling on this. When I was in CCD classes, this was taught authoritatively. Not as a "theory".

The Church has pondered the suggestion of Limbo for a few hundred years and has decided that it is not a good idea. Limbo was never official doctrine.
Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:15-16)
For centuries, people have wondered about children who died before they were baptized. The Bible does not explicitly state that they will go to heaven.
Limbo was suggested as the place where unbaptized babies went when they died. This idea was never official Church doctrine and has been rejected.
The Church now says that it is not sure what happens to unbaptized babies when they die but she entrusts them to the mercy of God.
With love in Christ.

Limbo was never a formal doctrine of the Church, unlike Purgatory. Limbo was believed by some to be the place where unbaptized children and people who had never heard the Gospel were sent. It was thought to be a pleasant place, but those in Limbo were forever denied the Beatific Vision (seeing God face to face.) The Pope recently declared that there was not enough evidence to support the belief in Limbo. Purgatory -- the place where we are cleansed of our sins and worldly attachments -- is very much a doctrine of the Church. Purgatory frees us from any sinful desires or worldly attachments so that we can enter Heaven. Limbo is definitely NOT another name for Purgatory.

Purgatory is and will continue to be a part of official Catholic theology until the end of time.
Limbo was always just a theological theory or construct that had some support within the church, but no official doctrinal standing.
That's why the general term 'limbo" refers to anything that is uncertain or not completely understood.

I went to CCD classes as well and I still don't understand it. I really don't listen to anything the Catholic church says, they can't seem to understand that they don't pay taxes, so you can't tell me what to do. Ok I'm ranting, but I thought Purgatory and Limbo were like the same place, limbo is just another term. But I do think they still believe in puratory and there are people who believe they know people who are there (in Purgatory)

limbo is a theological teaching that was corrected by the holy spirit. while still not properly understood the theory has changed surrounding it. limbo was never doctrine but theory. the notion of purgatory is still accepted and in line with the bible and the catechism.

Purgatory is in, Limbo is out. Limbo was not official doctrine of the church, but many believe in it. I was not taught about limbo in ccd classes. But purgatory is official doctrine of church. But not taught much any more.

Purgatory is a doctrine (CCC #1031).
The theory of Limbo "remains a possible theological opinion" ('Hope of Salvation' #41).

Limbo was a concept created by the Catholic church to get money. They told followers that they could buy their way out of limbo by giving money to the church. I think they stopped teaching that when people wised up to the scam.
