I am in the process of providing aftercare for my freshly inked first tattoo. I am so happy with it, and understand the guidance to not let the tattoo dry out. I am not overmoisturizing, either, but I am curious to learn what happens to a tattoo that receives more moisture than is ideal, i.e., if someon repeatedly oversaturated a tattoo with too much lotion? Is the guidance not to overdo it simply because more moisture is not necessary, or is it actually harmful to the tattoo?

It is hard to over-moisturize a tattoo with lotion since they are generally water based. The problem with over doing aftercare is inherent to petroleum jelly based products like Vaseline, Aquaphor, A&D, or many antibiotic ointments.

It is believed over use pulls color because the color never seems to get locked into the dermis and comes off with the sloughing of the outer layer. Things get further complicated that bacteria can accumulate on the surface with too thickly applied aftercare product that are petroleum based.
