That is often how it works, having been introduced to a new idea you notice how the more extreme elements of your 'side' no longer seem reasonable.

Almost always. Beware of the assumption that there are only two sides to an argument. There are often as many "sides" as there are people arguing. Extreme views are important in defining the boundaries of an argument but I think you are completely correct in finding your own voice and resisting the influence of someone whose opinion is more extreme than you are comfortable with.

I didn't switch sides but many times have felt compelled to point out the fallacy of extreme views and ended up debating with those "on my side".

Normally, if I'm sure that my position is correct, rather than switching sides I would simply try to distance myself from the extremists. However, I have occasionally had to switch sides when further investigation into a subject made me realize I was wrong.

There are three sides to every two-sided argument. Side A, Side B, and the moron section (populated by idiots who think they're arguing for one side or the other, but are, in fact, just embarrassing everyone).

If I'm ever in the moron section, I hope someone will shoot me and put me out of my misery.

Yeah, that's why I went from a Democrat to an Independent. And my boyfriend went from a Republican to an Independent.

No, I just don't argue the same way they do. It's like how I am a vegetarian but despise PETA because they give us a bad name.
