Is there really that much of a difference between 720p and 1080p HDTVs when it comes to video games?

Our family is looking for an HDTV for our bonus room and we want to know whether to invest the money in a 1080p HDTV or just stick with 720p.

If you will be using the PS3 or the Xbox 360 a 1080p TV is recommended for playing true High Definition gaming... If you will be using the Wii or any older system then 720p is good...
