I believe it is very occult. I saw another movie called Black Orpheus (French) and they had a scene where Orpheus went to the voodoo woman to talk to his dead lover. Those people were not acting, that was real possession!
The Serpent and the Rainbow will scare the heck out of you also.
I heard that those that practice voodoo secretly pretended that they were converted by the Catholic Church, but continued to practice their religion using the statutes like the Virgin Mary. I'd stay away from it.
I also knew a co-worker who visited the Museum of Voodoo in New Orleans and brought back a souvenir voodoo doll + pins for me as a present. I trashed that baby as soon as she left. Gave me the heebie jeebies.

Yes, Voodoun is the National Religion of Haiti. There are Voodoun practitioners in the United States. It's a genuine Religion just like Wicca and other forms of Paganism. There simply are not a whole lot of followers of Voodoun and that is why it's very little known or understood.

No, it's no more real than any other religion. Yes, there are people who practice it and believe.
It is a hybrid of African religions and Christianity, coming originally from black American slaves who had a (partial) Christian conversion foisted upon them.
'Hoodoo' is a gentler version of the same.
Worldwide, the country that practices it the most is Haiti. In the USA it is or was most popular in New Orleans. In the UK it is most popular in East Grinstead (although it is unconnected to the Scientologists, who also have their UK centre there).

Although I did not see The Skeleton Key, I was assured by my teenage daughter that it portrayed the Vodou tradition in the typical erroneous way that we have come to expect from Hollywood. The Vodou is a powerful spiritual tradition with its roots in Africa. It was carried to the so-called new world in the very blood of the Africans who were stolen from their homes to work for free to build the United States into what used to be the strongest economy in the world.
Vodou and its sister African Traditional Religions (ATRs) including but not limited to Santeria/Lukumi, Candomble, Umbanda, Obeah, and Palo are quite possibly the most widely practiced spiritual traditions in the Western hemisphere next to Christianity given that outside the US it is not uncommon for practicing Catholics and Christians to also practice an ATR.
A simple search on the Internet would yield you numerous web sites you could visit to learn more about the traditions and their participants. I have listed only a few of them below.
