It is a combination of gin or vodka and dry vermouth. Only a few drops to a splash are necessary.

I put ice in a glass or shaker. Add vermouth and shake or stir around. Pour out all the vermouth so only what coats the ice remains. Add gin and strain into a martini glass. Makes a very dry martini.

I like vodka martinis but you can use gin. 4 parts vodka, one part dry vermouth in ice, stir 100 times (this puts the water in to the mixture), pour into glass. Add stuffed olive (I like jalapeno stuffed), or cocktail onion, or lemon peel. Enjoy

A martini is vermouth and gin in any combination but usually less vermouth - and an olive. They're strong so be careful.
