My friend gave me his surround sound with the receiver, all the wires, and the speakers. I don't have the instructions so I can't figure out what I need to do without playing around a bit. I recently got a new lcd tv and I noticed that on the back of the tv there is an optical jack. There is also one on receiver. Would this be a quick way to hook up between the tv and the receiver? Then I can figure out how to hook up the dvd player later. Also, can anyone tell me what these cables are called so if I decide to get one I can find it at the store. Thanks

Optical = digital audio

The optical jack on the TV is an output. Buy the optical TOSLINK cable for 10-20 bucks and connect the two jacks together--this will allow any Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound mixes to be rerouted from your wimpy TV speakers to your surround sound system. If this is the only optical jack, though, I would recommend saving it for the DVD player.

Optical jacks are for fiber optic audio transmission. They are the best way to transmit a purely digital audio signal. Will get you Dolby Digital or DTS if the program or dvd is recorded with it.

They are the digital cables which give you the surround effect at the movie theaters. Use them for your cable/satellite HD box and your dvd player. You don't need to use the one on the Tv-that is if you are recieving your Hd over the air.
