You can make the most impact in your community doing things that you like to do. Your volunteer center can help you find specific community projects and non-profit agencies in your local area to help you make an impact in your community.

Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the library, enrich arts and culture by helping visitors at the local museum, work at the local food bank, children's shelter, and clean our neighborhoods, parks, and beaches. They make it easy to find stuff that's fun to do, and can provide you with the appropriate forms you will need for community service.

Good luck!

First, congratulations on being inducted into the National Honor Society!

Yes, church-related activities typically do count toward community service hours, as long as they aren't things like participating in a Sunday morning church service or something like that. Teaching Sunday school or helping out taking care of younger kids and stuff like that is fine.

There are a ton of different volunteer opportunities out there. I'm sure your church does a lot of community service activities.
Most communities have soup kitchens and shelters that need help. Clothing drives and food drives, too. You can volunteer at the local hospital as a candy striper (old term) or Red Cross chapter, and you can shelve books at the local library. You can help out at a retirement home or go the Adopt-A-Grandparent route. You can raise money for charities and all sorts of things. The possibilities are endless.
A good search engine for volunteer opportunities is

That can help you get started.
Good luck, and have fun! It's great to give back to the community, and it sounds like you've already started. And remember, don't just do it to meet NHS requirements, and don't just stop at 20 hours. Giving back is a reward in and of itself.

I am thrilled to hear of a request for community service. Having had a couple relatives in nursing homes I would push for asking local homes what you can do to help. They are lonely and love to have company. Sometimes older people want to talk about the good old days and need a good listener. Some would like a letter written but can no longer use a pen but can dictate to you. Reading the local news to someone who no longer can read the print helps the time go by. They may just want to hear about your life and what is new in the world. You receive so much in return from helping the elderly.

I like Sunshines Food Bank idea. Look up their address on mapquest. I drive my own truck and can verify that just because I can go into a hood does not mean you would want to be there.

I think one of my kids did the convalescent hospital thing. You can look for a place a like assisted living. I take wheelchairs and things to these places. They have their own apt. but might enjoy a Grandchild age person.

My brother is a chef and does cooking at a soup kitchen every T-day. They need dishwashers and bus people too.

I suggest what ever you do try going out beyond the real easy stuff. Experience comes from adventure not playing it safe.

Theres lots of places that need volunteers. I remember I used to go to church camps , I've been a cabin monitor, dishwasher, etc. If theres a Salvation Army where you live they always need volunteers. Is there a Veterans home close by? Theres no greater joy than helping someone else. God Bless You. Shirley ( Nannie )

My daughter did her entire Sr. project by volunteering at our local fire company. She is now a certified fire fighter and has decided to follow up with a career in nursing after helping injured persons at many automobile accidents. You don't have to fight fires to volunteer at your local fire company, most have auxiliary members that help with the fund raising efforts in order to keep a volunteer fire company running. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

There are tons of places to volunteer anywhere... it just depends what appeals to you. You could go to the humane society, hospital, nursing home, local events like races or carnival type activities, etc. What appeals to you? Then go do it!

i like volunteering at marathons and bike races. it's actually really fun and exciting.
you could also work at a food bank and serve food to the poor.
