If you travel with the baby alone...I suggest you to pay a sit for it for that long trip otherwise you can hold the baby on your lap if you have someone else with you to help at times. Flight attendance are too busy and can't get them easy when you need to go to the washroom and if the baby is a bit cranky at times it's really tiring to have her all the way for 10 hrs flight considering your time of getting of the plane and doing your paper works at the customs is not easy. At least you may have a rest if she have another sit but again it's not worth paying it if you have your hubby with you or anyone with you all the way to help you sometimes. I take my 10 month old with me to the church every Sunday and I experience having her on my arms most of the time cause I can't put her down you know. And it's not easy even though I have my sister with me to help sometimes...it's not the same thing as that they can crawl on the floor. I know she will not sit by herself all the way but at least you can put her to sleep sometimes and it feels relaxing to unload her sometimes from your arms. It's worth it if you pay that sit for her.

Pay the $400 bucks! That is a long flight and you will need to get up and move around. To go to the bathroom and stretch your legs if nothing else. You are the adult by the way, make her sit in the seat.

10 hrs is a long time. Is there some on else going too? So you can at least stretch your legs? I guess a stewardess would hold her for that time. WIll she sleep? I'd not pay for the 2nd seat cause maybe it'll be empty anyway and that would be a good thing. But if not, wow, that could be crowded

According to one of the pediatricians I work for, airlines are supposed to sell a seat for an infant at half price. It's not something they publicize because they don't like to do it. (Why should they sell it at half price when a parent can hold their child in their lap and the airline can get full price for it?) So, honestly, I'd call the airline and ask for the discounted rate - speak to a supervisior if you need to - before you make that final decision.
Because remember this: a sleeping 25lbs of toddler can feel like a two-hundred degree lead weight when you need to go to the bathroom! (And many flight attendants are too busy to hold a wailing child so that the parents can get up.)

I've been on a few long term flights like the one you've mentioned. I usually see the mothers holding them in there lap and every once and awhile they get up and walk around the plane while cradling their child.
10 hour flights are generally crowded.
Cheers!

Buy a seat for your baby.
Planes these days are full !
It is much safer for the baby to be in a safety seat for his/her own safety.
I'll bet your baby sleeps a lot.
Have a great trip.

if its allowed to only buy one seat for both of you then by all means DO.
theres high chance that the plane wont be full and thers even more chance that the seat next to you is empty, and tell me who has the dear to tell a small child to get out of an empty seat and whos gonna know that she didnt pay for it ;).
