If I had your talent for making wedding gowns, I would definately get into the business, and I would make gowns with sleeves. It is incredible how many bride-to-bes are not confident enough to show their arms, or how many people get married that had scars from chemotherapy on their arms, and so they are looking for dresses with sleeves.

A lot of dresses made in the 80s and before the 80s had sleeves, but now, most of them are sleeveless. I bet you could make a fortune making pretty dresses with light sleeves on them, and make sure if you put them on a sight that you state that you started this business with women´s figures in mind.

Yes, start on Craigslist-this is where I first started looking for a dress, and build up so you can rent space in a location-doesn´t have to be a big and elaborate space. Remember, this KISS-keep it simple stupid, and you can be a success!

The thing is, a lot of women can't afford really expensive dresses, especially with paying for everything else that comes with a wedding. I've definitely been shopping around, and planning on going to the David's bridal $99 sale. If you're really good, you'll probably make some money, but I wouldn't just stick with wedding gowns, is there something else you can do along with wedding gowns?? That should help you out a lot.

You mean design wedding gowns and dresses. My suggestion is to make a few prototypes of wedding gowns and dresses. Then I would go to classy wedding boutiques and department stores who have bridal departments. Show your designs to the buyer if you can get an appointment. If the buyer likes your designs, then she would carry a few designs. Then you would take orders. Another way would be is to give a fashion show for your local charity for free. Ask girlfriends to be models and you would get a chance to show your designs. All the proceeds would go to the charity, but you in turn would have a venue to show off your designs. Another way, advertise that you design and sew wedding gowns and dresses. When you get someone who wears your dress and there are compliments and comment, you would get business. Marketing something takes time and persistence and if I were you, don't give up your dream. If you follow your dream, you will eventually be successful.

You could, but you wont right away. You will have to build up a clientelle first and thats usually by word of mouth at first, even if you do a marketing campaign girls wont go to an unknown dress maker, especially for their wedding dress, unless recommended by someone they trust.

My recommendation would be to find one bride and go from there, maybe a member of your family, brides always know other brides, so from there you can ask that if they are happy that they recommend you to others.

I will say this though, possibly because I am from an expensive area, but I wouldnt go to a dress maker because I think their prices are much more expensive than a bridal shop, so you may have to deal with that kind of mentality as well. When people think "custom" they think "expensive"

Good luck

My friend has a straight son who makes one-of-a--kind designer dresses for a living. I think he makes a basic living, but doesn't own his own home.

You might want to read a biography of that woman's designer who just died. Was it Liz Claiborne? Maybe there would be some hints in there. She obviously made millions.

You definately wouldn't make great money. Vera Wang's are an exception and most people don't make that much.

I would start simply with things like ebay and criagslist to build a customer base and then move up from there.

advertise locally in the newspapers, especialy the bridal editions. try to get some space at bridal shows. see if your area has local bridal magazines that feature local vendors... get an ad in.
put some up on ebay.
make a dress for a friend who is getting married and have her mention you all over... maybe even put your name in the program.
