Typically, yes...but what you put into a dog is what you get out of a dog. They need a lot of exercise and are happiest when they have a job to do. Have you thought about obedience, agility or even herding?

Border Collies are very intelligent. Most border collies are extremely sweet, but if you don't keep them occupied with something at all times, they can get a little nippy and mean. All a border collie wants to do is play and have fun. Oh and also herd!!!! If you just happen to have a cat or any small animal, trust me a border collie will try to herd it. I had a border collie that attempted to herd the neighborhood kids. Yes, it may sound funny, but a border collie is hard work. If you really want one you are going to have to make a commitment that you are going to always keep it entertained and out of trouble. My border collie unfortunately was a little mean. He disliked my different dogs and cats. He also tried to bite the kids that would come into the yard to play. I had to be extremely careful when I took him for walks. Let me tell you, it was really hard. Most border collies that I have met were nice, but there's always that one or two that aren't like the others.
Check out the website I posted below. This will tell you if you will make a good border collie owner.

A border collie will be smart and nice if it's owner is smart and nice ... because border collies are very much 'people dogs' who 'identify with' and act like their owners. So, if you want a 'smart, nice border collie' ask your Grandpa to go 'shopping' for one with you, and accept the one HE LIKES BEST (he KNOWS YOU, so that will work well for you) and then 'train it' according to what your grandpa tells you to do. And be sure to give your grandpa a big hug and kiss ... because he's your grandpa and you LOVE HIM, which is why you want a border collie in the first place.

Not all are great I used to have one but it bit me in the face and wouldnt stop barking so i had to give it away. The same thing happened to my friends border collie but i think it all depends on the way you train them. You have to be strict and very rewarding. Good Luck!

I have a border collie. she's a lovely dog, BUT not always nice.
One thing you should definitely think of is if you really have enough time for it. border collies are extremely activ dogs and need a lot of exercise and attention.
have a look at this website

in general, border collies are great dogs but, they like to run. you have to keep them very active as they don't usually stand for a sedentary life.

They are great and very trainable but very high energy and need a job to do. They do best if involved in a doggie sport or have a job on a farm or ranch.
