Okay wow the people who answered before me don't have a clue what they are talking about. First of all let me just say that I've had my tongue pierced for about 3 years now with abosolutely no problems whatsoever with it. It is the least painful piercing you could possibly get (with the exception of earlobes of course). That being said.. yes, should you decide to go through with it you should do it on a day that you have off of work, and probably should have the next day off too just to be on the safe side. Swelling is the only drawback of having your tongue pierced, it usually only lasts for a couple days though with proper care and treatment.. I suggest sucking on icecubes EVERY chance you get, they will reduce the swelling and speed the healing process by massive amounts of time, you can also use these drops (forgot what they're called) they basically disinfect the area, you put 3 drops on the new piercing and it fizzes and turns your tongue white, but it numbs any discomfort. Remember to use listerine (the blue kind is best) after EVERY meal and/or cigarette.
As for talking funny.. not really. You may find it feeling funny and it may seem like you're talking differently, but in reality it won't be noticeable, and you'll be able to get away with it just fine. I don't believe I had a hard time at all, I maybe produced a little more spit than usual in the first week or so lol!
Eating is a little tricky at first, since you'll have a foreign object in you mouth, you may mistake it for food.. this is the hardest part. Trust me, you'll want to eat slower because if you accidentally bite down on the metal ball, you'll wish you listened.. lol. Getting used to it though, again, really only takes a couple days, take it slow at first, and it'll seem normal in no time!
After the initial healing time (I believe it's around 2-3 months) you should go to you piercer and have them put in a shorter bar (they use a longer bar to pierce with to accomodate for swelling) or you could keep the longer bar if it's comfortable for you. I myself stuck with the longer bar, I tried out shorter ones but didn't like it.
I think I covered everything.. hope this helps, and trust me, it's worth the experience! Good luck!

Ask around people who have had their tongue pierced. For some people a little swelling is unavoidable, we are all different, but it also depends on how well the person pierces you. Go to the specific person who is most recommended, not just the place. Follow all the directions they give you for taking care of the piercing.
Take a few days off work so any swelling has a chance to go down and you can get a tongue bar that has either clear or light pink colored balls so it's not so noticeable.
Chances are that your boss will find out about the piercing and if he has a strict policy against them you want to consider which is more important the piercing or this job.

Drink ice cold drinks and munch on ice chips. Take Advil, the ibuprofen reduces swelling. Honestly though, you might want to call in sick for a few days. You are most likely going to talk funny no matter what. You'll be able to eat somewhat normal within a couple of days. Just stay away from spicy, salty, and hot foods. I've had mine for 2 1/2 weeks and I still take longer to eat than before. And still talk funny here and there. Once it's completely healed and you can switch out the bar for a shorter one, everything is supposed to go back to normal. I think that is when you will actually talk 100% normal again, too.
Good luck!!

I have alot of friends who have had that piercing done,
The swelling goes down fairly quickly after the first two days,
And the lisp doesn't stay very long, at most 12 hours, because you get used to the size of your tongue.

You better take at least a week off of work. You are not going to be able to hide it from your boss.
