I guess you are quite young. If you are going for a hot hatch, the insurance will cripple you. If you must go ahead, Golf GTI, Peugeot GTI, and Honda civic sports,They will all whizz you around and into lamposts.

I personally would go for a nice, well looked after, Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi. For £2,500 you could pick up a really tidy well looked after one.
You could also for that money get a 205 GTi which has had another Peugoet engine implanted in to it; either the older Mi16 engine (2 litre 16v), or people are now even putting the engines from 306 GTi 6 speeds in to the 205's.
I had a 205 1.9 GTi and it was fantastic, totally original and it went like crazy and was real fun to drive.

Acura RSX Type S. 210 hp. Small hatchback. Great acceleration, 0-60 in 6.0. Top speed is 160. I drove mine 155 but don't recommend it.
With only 2500? Try an Acura Integra. It is virtually the same car.

90-95 'ish Civic hatchback. I had a 97 CX forever and was a great car. I wrecked it twice (bad), but was mechanically sound. Just regular maintenance was needed.

You might stretch to a Suzuki Cappuccino, or an MG Midget.

If your in the states use www.craigslist.org and you can search in your area.
With 2500 you can get something in the 90's for sure.

Dpends...Import, or american. Sentra, or civic, or corrolla, or even the escort, or ZX2, or even the cavalier, or sunfire. Depends, on your tastes, and such.
