I will be moving after college and would like to move out of state. The thing is, I would have to have a job first before I do any moving. If I want a job, in lets say, Tennessee, would I have to drive all the way down there for the interview (which is about nine hour drive), or do they do some kind of special over the phone interview? How does the process work for out of state job applying?

Most of the time you have to drive or fly on your own. Only in rare cases where they have a special type of position that they haven't been able to fill locally will they pay to fly you out.

You will sometimes find people willing to do a phone interview, that's fairly common. But usually they won't hire you until after the 2nd interview, and that would almost definitely need to be in person.

This is why a lot of people don't get out of state jobs. You have to either make sacrifices or take risks in order to get a job out of state.

You might consider getting a job locally that has an office out of state, and try to get yourself transferred there. That might be the easiest and safest way.

put your resume online at places like monster.com, or find a relative in the area where you want to go and stay with them will you get temp work, and while you're doing the temping you can look for perm work. A lot of companies have websites and on their website they either have employment applications or list what jobs are open and where, and you can always contact them by email. It used to be in the past that you go in person for an interview (if you're good enough, if you're what they want, then they will pay for you to fly there), that phone interviews were only for out of country applicants. If you want a job in a certain company and because there is so much competition now, I'd suggest you find someone who works there already and have them pull you in.

Typically if you're being considered for a professional job out of your area, they'll do a fairly extensive phone interview first. Then if they are still interested, they'll ask you to come to their site. They might or might not pay your expenses for that trip.
