I don't think that's why although that is a good thought. I think we will never know why God chose John not to be martyred like the rest although tradition has it that they tried to boil him in oil and God caused an earthquake that tipped over the cauldren he was in. But the bottoms of his feet burned so bad that he never walked right after that.

I agree that Jesus is the son of Love.
What irks me is how people invoke his name to do such horribly hateful things.
The other thing that irks me is when someone survives some sort of calamity and says, 'God answered my prayer that day.' Which implies that God didn't answer the prayer of the 83 other people in that flood, or airplane crash, or whatever. If God answered one person's prayer in that calamity then does that mean that everyone else was evil and deserved to die? Was this one person's prayer more pure? What about the newborn infants that died in that wreck? Did God love them so much he wanted to call them home to heaven?
I have a really hard time when people ascribe the 'grace of God' to saving them in calamitous events, especially when other people have died so horribly.

Fear is the natural expression of humanity
Perfection is the path of the fool and the craven
Jesus was a nice guy and would understand this
Least that's what I think

Is there a point to this drive-by preaching?
John didn't die because he had no fear? Or he was just able to hide better?

John died too. You're dealing with legend, not verifiable fact.

I think I would answer as Jesus did to Peter:
"If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You must follow Me"
(John 21)
