I believe that society functions best when it is cooperative and that means that we all pay a little bit. Look I am in the 25% tax bracket and after my standard deduction, mortage/home equity interest and a few hundred dollars in charitable deductions (based on the IRS's own standards) for the last several years I only paid 8% of my income in taxes. I am not a rich person but the fact is that the more money I make the less I seem to pay in taxes. When I first left college I made a much less money and had to pay for my taxes with my VISA card. I didn't have insurance so my parents paid my medical bills since I'm lucky enough to have parents who can afford to do such things. I don't think it is too much to ask that we as a country commit to taking care of the basic health care needs of millions of American without insurance. My tax refund has been a nice little addition every year but is wasn't so large that getting a bit less would change my lifestyle. There are some things a little more important than this persistent "as long as I get mine" attitude that seems to afflict this country.

I'm guessing you are being sarcastic jennyann.
but for anyone who thinks we should,
Socialized medicine doesn't work, that's why so many Canadians come here for medical care instead of waiting months for basic and emergency care.
Americans already pay too much in taxes for the privelidge of what? The government is charged with so little, and they add so much to all that they don't do well.
Well, they do pay themselves well, and they have great benefits like health care, and an amasing retirement plan.
If the federal government stopped funneling money into failed programs and departments that produce nothing but paper and hot air, they could return all the money that they borrowed (stole) from Social Security and provide basic health care for those who have none.
We are already paying for the illegals who are pouring into our country with higher prices when ever we go to the Doctor, ER or pay our health insurance premium or copay. Hospitals are not allowed to turn anyone away because they cannot pay and are not allowed to ask if they are legal.
ER's all over the country are closing because the hospitals can't afford to keep them open.
I have an idea. Let's just let the government have all of our money to misuse, and they can give us what ever they think we need to survive. After all, they think they are so much smarter that we are.
How do we ever manage?

1-Americans hate taxes; taxation was a prime cause of the revolution. We are taxed enough as it is.
2-Socialized medicine, in a word, "SUCKS!"
The government cannot do everything for you, and typically cannot run business to any competent degree. Look at the Post Office, AMTRAK, or Social Security. Do you know how much better off you would be if you were allowed to invest your FICA contributions as you see fit? I contribute more to FICA then my IRA, and my IRA will pay out much, much more then Social Security. The government that governs less governs best. The answer to all of life's problems is not tax and spend, look at education if you don't believe me. Throw more money at it, it gets no better, yet that is all they scream for, we spend more then any other nation on education. The problem is the AEA union, and parents not pulling their share. You cannot let the state raise your children, or for that matter care for your health. Go to Cuba, free health care there, just don't ***** about it, they might shoot you.

We don't need higher taxes for health care. We need health care reform. The medical industry and insurance companies are the problem. Reform the the way the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies run and it would provide health care for most. The republican lobbyist are major sponsors of the republican party.

I don't want to pay higher taxes for anything. Higher taxes means more government spending. Spending by Congress is already way out of control.
I have health care insurance. I pay enough for it.

For all of you that think that it wouldn't work and that taxes would just be way out of control - why don't we try to get some facts straight - for instance it works just fine for most Europeans. Secondly, for those of you that don't want to have to pay for other people - I think you are all selfish buttholes too good to see or pay attention to anything that exists outside your little bubble. People are suffering and need health care - not everyone is priviliged as you. But let me tell you a little secret, a large number of those people that are suffering without healthcare are the one responsible for you being so priviliged. They're called Vets and they fought for your freedom to be selfish, so why not try giving a little back, eh?

I don't want to pay higher taxes for heath care for the simple reason that I already have to pay for my own heath care (out of my check), why should I have to pay additional for those who don't have insurance. Am I not paying for health coverage twice? Once for my family and once for someone elses?

Yeah, i might have a huge challenge with it. I lived with socialized drugs for countless years interior the united kingdom and this is advantageous in case you have the sniffles or might desire to have a boil lanced or a broken arm set. even if as quickly as you choose an high priced life-saving technique mutually with a quadruple pass, you're caught on a waiting record till the two your huge sort comes up or you die. maximum persons die, regrettably. government does not take care of healthcare o.k. in any respect. the total fee is finally larger interior the long-term and the known of care takes a nosedive. do no longer confuse time-honored Healthcare as proposed by some political applicants with Socialized drugs. they are not a similar ingredient! 50 years in the past we relatively had time-honored Healthcare with Blue pass/Blue shield - a tightly regulated quasi-monopoly insurance. almost each pastime presented it for minimum fee and it coated maximum persons of all your scientific expenditures. Then the lobbyists for the insurance companies pushed the politicians for "opposition" to cut back expenditures. even if the insurance companies have been allowed to "cherry p.c.." the terrific shoppers, i.e. the youngest and fittest. this is all been downhill because then.
