I love cookery books, but always find that i have to go the supermarket to get special ingrediants, coz the recipies are all so elaborate.

What i want is a normal cookery book, with healthy, family friendly meams for me and the kids.
Any ideas? thanx!

Ceserani and Kinton - Volume 1, Practical Cookery. It is used as the basic textbook in most cookery colleges in the UK.

Delia Smith has done a good basic cookbook as well, but Ceserani and Kinton is a lot more succinct, and will give you the solid knowledge, without personal interventions, that will enable you to gradually construct your own cuisine from solid, ground-level, proven knowledge.

Go into Smith's book shop have a browse around the cook book section and see which cook book inspires you the most and that is the one for you, i love my Hamlyn all colour cook book, i have had it now for twenty five years but use it all the time, it shows me soups starters main courses desserts cakes and pastry's, what more could i want from a cook book,i also have other cook books that i have collected over the years but this is the one i come back to every time.

I love my cookbooks & have several, but the two I use the most are " The Lady & Sons: Savannah Country Cooking by Paula Deen" and "The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook". Both are filled with tried & true southern traditions. I also subscribe to Southern Living Magazine - I love their recipes and Taste of Home - all their recipes are sent in by readers just like you & me!!

My favourite cookbook is an old volume they used to use for schools. It's called:
Cooking Explained by Barbara Hammond
It tells you how to make any kind of sauce, gravy, pastry, diferent methods for cakes, biscuits and bread. Also how to cook any cut of meat and a number of pudding and sweet recipies.
With this you can pretty much workout how to cook any dish you fancy.

I agree that the Good Housekeeping book is very good, basic recipes for everyday foods and some special occasion stuff. It's how i learned to cook.
The Joy of Cooking is also very good.

There's a GREAT magazine you can either subscribe to or buy at the store. It's called Taste of Home, and all of its recipes are sent in by people just like me & you!!

Get one at the store, look through it with the kids, and find a few to try. Its a terrific way to make mealtime a learning, bonding, and FUN experience!
