Sport karate or tournament fighting is not the same as real fighting. I have done both successfully and there is a huge difference in strategy, distance, and purpose. I know of no boxing tournaments where they just play tag for points and then the action is stopped to award those points before continuing; even in the amateurs. Now if you take a well trained, experienced, kick boxer then you may see a real fight.

In the late 60s early 70s they had several matches between boxers and karate fighters on Wide World of Sports. Not surprising the boxers won-they were mediocre professionals and this was well before kickboxing came along in this country. Not only that but the rules favored the boxers since there was no kicking to the legs, thighs, groin, or knees and both fighters wore boxing gloves. This also restricted the martial artists from using open handed strikes to the face, eyes, neck and throat area. Muhammad Ali fought a famous Japanese fighter in Japan in the late 70s. In the second round he landed a solid right and from then on the Japanese fighter fought from the ground using a crab like position and kicking Ali's legs and thighs for the next several rounds. Ali could not reach him with his punches and the fight went the distance and Ali was declared the winner. Ali did go to the hospital later that night for blood clots and circulation problems.

If your "karate guy" can include mma fighters (ie. mixed martial arts - UFC, Pride fighting), I'm sure in a street fight, the MME guy would kick the boxer's butt easily. Of course, if you make them fight with Boxing rules, the boxer would probably win and if they fight with MMA rules, the MMA guy would win. If it is a real life street fight, I'd put my $$$ on the MMA guy for sure since MMA rules are are much closer to a real fight scenario.

If you're referring to a "karate guy" as a traditional martial artist (ie. karate, Tkd, judo, muay thai), I'd say it depends a lot on the actual fighters and what type of styles are going up against the boxer. If I had to make a decision, I'd still pick a martial artist.

i do both boxing and karate :)

about 99% the boxer i can say this from doing both

the reason is a simple one also

TRAINING as a boxer i gotta train every day for long periods of time

karate guys more often than not train 3-4 days a week for about 1 and a half hours each lesson the minimum sessions at my gym are 2 hours and they push work outside the gym hard core lets face it if your not super fit and can punch move super effective you end up super knocked the **** out in the ring

this of course is just a generalisation if the karate guy trained as hard it would probably be the karate guy who knows about that

Most probably the boxer, but it depends on the conditions (how good the fighters are etc.). Boxing, as a whole, is simply much more effective than karate as a whole. But boxing in itself, is limited, of course, limited to using only 2 hands to attack, and having very limited defense. Karate to me, seems like a rather ineffective martial art, especially today. In terms of efficiency, you are best off learning; MMA, Boxing, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, and traditional Kung Fu.

Not in tournaments, but I have students study in boxing because I respect the martial art so much. Still, a little grappling, and knee kicks evens out the boxers style. It's better to study both.

Look, these are stupid questions if you think about it. All depends on what level they are in their field of training. There is no way anyone can say who would win because it all depend on the fighters themselves. Now that being said, if you take Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. the best Karate fighter in the world of that same weight in a fight to death then I will take the karate guy since the boxer is only trained in his hands where a karate expert is trained to kill or disable. Think about about.....

karate guy, in karate u also learn to use the legs, boxing u just learn the upper body. One sweep to the legs by the karate guy wud cause the boxers gaurd to come down because they wudnt know what to do so then the karate guy can strike with ease

This issue had already been settled since 1968 when Aaron Banks held his famous mixed martial art fights in Madison Square Garden.

It boiled down to the skill and attitude of the fighter.

Any guy in UFC could beat a boxer, because they always leave their legs open and don't know how to check a kick. UFC fighters often have experience with boxing and know it's flaws.
