I know they always used to say it on The Brady Bunch, but did people really use that type of slang in real life?

I hate to say it, but yeah, they did. They even said things like 'that was a big tickle!' meaning it was funny or 'I'm cranked!' meaning they were excited. Even things like 'That's a fat city!' meaning it was a great thing or place, or that they were happy.
And anyway, it wasn't that long ago either.
The slang words there were from the 50s!
Imagine us saying those now. LOL
I can't.
Slang now are words like 'cool' or 'awesome' or 'ain't'. Things have changed a whole lot since then, haven't they?

That's "out of sight" and no hyphen in far out.

They did indeed used to say that stuff back then but nowhere near as frequently as TV shows and movies made it out to be. Kids and young adults were much more likely to say "cool" than any of those other phrases combined.

Additional: Oh yeah, they also used to say "Man" a lot. And "yo".

Yes. We said that, I am ashamed to admit. Ever watch an "Austin Powers" movie? Groovy, baby!
Uptight and out of sight!

It was out-of-sight, though pronouced out-o'-sight.

Yes, indeed, we used to say all that stuff, at least the cool people did -- the freaks, as opposed to the straights (which meant something different in those days).

Your question reminds me of a joke of the time.

A guy TRYING to seem cool and with-it kept saying "farm out!" and "out of state!"

Finally, the person he was talking to corrected him, to which he replied, "Bumper!"

In my family, we've used "bumper" for "bummer" ever since. (Bummer started as drug slang for a "bum trip" on acid.)

When my sister was a child and teen, the biggies were "wicked" and, my favorite "bitchin!" (both meaning good things).

We good, we bad, we hot, we cool! (That one's mine, and mine alone; if you use it, you have to pay me.)

;-)

Yes, those words were very popular in the late 60's and into the 70's.

yes they did...however, when they depict the 60's in movies today, they give you the impression that everyone had long hair, and were hippies....that is not true....by the time the Brady Bunch was saying it .... the hippies were not....and by the way the hippies sold out.....became yuppies.....and republicans
