I have a Sony Bravia HD LCD connected to my 6 year old sony dvd player with component video cables (green,blue and red). WHen i play a dvd it is giving me a 480i resolution, why? how can i get a 480p resolution or if possible a 720p.

Don't worry. Your TV automatically upscales the DVD signal from 480i to 720p, the native resolution of the TV.
Even if your DVD player has progressive out (480p), I am sure that the TV can do a much better job than your old DVD player.

In any case, check if your player has a button in the front, back, or on the remote called progressive.
If not, check the player's setup menu (under video). If it has progressive, give it a try, but I am sure your TV is doing a better job.
