Since we Mormons keep sex within the marriage will Elizabeth Smart have to be sealed in eternity with her abductor or should we change the rules to include a provision for rape?
It seems that every time our Mormon church gets stuck with something that just ain't kosher we have to change the rules (ie. polygamy).

I feel so sorry for Elizabeth Smart... WHat a horrible experience, and especially a horrible experience to have as a mormon. They believe in better dead than defiled, as Spencer Kimball wrote in "the Miracle of Forgiveness". The people in her ward must wonder why she didn't fight and why she didn't let herself be killed to "protect her virtue". I imaginse she faces a lot of gossip and judgemental attitudes about that.
I hope her family can work to get those attitudes, so prevelant in mormonism, changed.

What and how Elizabeth Smart lives her life and deals with her personal tragedy is none of your business!!! You are completely biased towards the Mormon religion and we were all taught that God created all men equally. And as far as becoming a predator, I think we should worry about you being a predator. Do you think if she were you sister you would think it healthy for her to "PUBLICLY" forgive her rapist. Doing so publicly would give peace and comfort to the wrong person, the RAPIST!!! That wasn't her fault and you'd have to ask her if she fogave him or not. Just because he forced her doesn't mean that she should have to be with him forever. She should have a chance in life too, ya know. And everybody makes mistakes, no matter the religion or lifestyle. God wouldn't look at it as though she had sex before marrige, since it wasn't her fault. She was forced. You're not really a mormon so shut up! And you're not really Ed Smart, so don't impersonate him!

I seem to remember from Krakauer's book that Smart expressed forgiveness for her abductor, and that her bishop (or equivalent) pronounced her pure before the Lord. I don't know enough about LDS theology to say if that was a cop-out or not. I know the "pure before the Lord" thing is right, can't be sure about the public expression of forgiveness.

What are you talking about, you sick man? If anyone is raped, it's not their fault! She has no obligation to him! If she can find it within herself to forgive him, it will help her heal, but she should never have to see him again. And no, the Mormon church does not change its rules on whims. It has been steady since its beginning.

She can get sealed to whomever she wants, wen the time is right. But, not to that guy, since, if he were LDS, he would be excommuncated. And ex'd people can't get sealed. They can't even go to the temple.
Yes, we keep sex within marriage, but that does not mean that one must marry everyone they ave sex with, especially if they were raped. That's just silly!
