Genesis 1:1 begins recording of events for human kind. We now have a starting point of things to occur or occurred prior to the formation of the heavens and Earth.

John 1:1 Shows the word of God, that is Jesus, was there at the time of the Heavens and Earth creation.

Col 1:16 shows that the Heavens and Earth were created THROUGH Jesus not by Jesus.

This is confirmed in the previous verse (V.15) where it says Jesus was created as the first creature before the Heavens even existed.

It simply means that according to the Word of God as given to Moses: The first things God created were the Heaven and the Earth. It is the first written account of God's Word.

Just an advocate for God here... http://godandscience.org/ This guy felt the same way...he was a scientist... he set out to prove God isn't real, and after exhausting all scientific stuff.. math, chemicals, elements, theory, data, data, data, experiments, etc.... he had to frustratingly concede the there MUST be a God, tooooo many perfect coincidences to create our universe, planet etc.. and then us... when the likelyhood that other elemental factors should've taken place instead... be sure to check out his introduction of himself... thats where he explains.

Never forget, the Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew. It wasn't meant to be interpreted the way most people interpret it.

If you can understand this link, you will begin to understand Genesis 1:1:

I find it more believable than,

A long time ago several billion of years ago, a big bang occurred.

Please provide another example of an explosion creating something other than a mess.

One thing the universe is not, it is not a mess.

People may be a mess but the universe is not.
