my dad, who refuses to go on any vacations, said that a week and a half vacation in florida is "a waste of money ." So my mom decided to plan a "tennis" vacation in New York during the Us Open for one week. Also, we planned to see two exhibition matches before that. Since my brother and I are tournament players, I thought this vacation would be productive in that we could observe and learn from the pros and have a good time at the same time. My dad was mad because the grand total for everything(food, tickets, hotel, airfare, etc) would come out to be about $4,500(he says he can affordit without worry). That sounds like a lot, but this would be the only vacation for the year for my mom, brother and me. I have been busy with school work,+ extracurriculars all year, , so I thought going somewhere else for only 9 days would be reasonable, . I know there are people who don't go on vacations and that "money doesn't grow on trees," but just considering the vacation itself, is it reasonable

All depends when his vacation time kicks in, if that is part of his benefits. If he doesn't have vacation time or the time warrents later on (or if not enough vacation time desired), he would need to either go with out pay or go the max vacation time he is allowed. If he wants more time, he can take the vacation time, plus non-paid leave the rest of the days or hours he wants off. If the wedding is in July, get the notice in now. All he has to do is write an explaination expressing reason of abcent: (simple explainations are: funeral/death, Personal neccessities (which is what I put for my wedding), etc). How many days would need off and whom, if anyone, can take his shift/place (which is a bonus to have giving the supervisor a good thought knowing he cares enough about his job he makes sure he finds people to fill in for him). Then it is up for the supervisor to review and decline or accept. He also needs to discuss this in person, not just by letter. Hun, as much as you want to help him, it is best he writes the letter. 1) a person's hand writting and even typing can be noticable. 2) He is just afraid of confrentation. He has to learn how to ask for leave by himself. If he is too scared to do so, he should re think about his self motivation and esteem. He shouldn't give you the task. I have helped my husband write his resumes etc. But there is a big difference between helping and actually doing it for him.

That is alot of money but realize that you are going during a very big and popular event, so hotels, and cars raise the rates when a big event comes to town. New York overall is expensive. To find a hotel in the city under 200.00 a night, would turn out to be a dive, so expect to pay alot for a nice hotel in New York. Restaurants, expensive as well, anything with Meat in the menu, you pay either double or triple for it. The price is reasonable for New York and because you are going to a big event. Also, it is an educational event because you are trying to improve on something you know. Say to yourself that you deserve this trip and GO.

Until you're the one making the money, you aren't the one who can decide what to do with it. :)

So if you can understand that, then you might want to thank your father for everything he's doing for you that you're getting for FREE ie not having to work for it, instead of whining at him. I promise your relationship with your dad will improve if you don't whine/yell/complain over things like this that you have no control of anyway, and he might offer to take you on vacation sometime without you even asking just because he enjoys spending time with his loving family. Until then though, it's just going to sound like a money waster and a stress increaser to his ears.

It's too bad your dad won't go on vacation - travelling is great and a great way to open your mind to new experience and people!

Good luck getting your dad to loosen up. Why can't your mom say - listen, hubby, I'm taking the kids and we're going - with or without you! It's her family and her bank accounts, too!
