I'm a newbie. I discovered Nascar after Dale Sr. died. I've watched many interviews and read a lot of commentary about old versus new. I was wondering how many of you feel who have been a fan for many years.

I am definitely a " Back in the day" kind of guy, where men were "allowed" to be men and rubbin' was racin' ! The fastest cars were preferred , engine builders were allowed to build the monster engines and the word restrictor plate was unheard of !

And it was not uncommon for the winner to be so far ahead that the driver had time to eat a hot dog ,wash it down with a coke and smoke a cigarette ( The cars actually had a lighters , radio's and windshield wipers LOL ) and still finish the race 20 laps ahead of second place ! ( It did happen )

Unsafe cars you say ? They didn't need all the stuff you see today because the cars were made in the USA of real american steel , they didnt crumple like the plastic and aluminum foil cars you see today. But I do agree that today's helmets , fireproof suits and such are totally necessary and if Dale Sr. had been wearing a full face helmet he would be alive today but w/o a hans device he would still have been injured somewhat !

The cars in days of yore were just like the ones you could buy at any dealership , ll you had to do was modify the suspension, Build a decent motor and install a roll cage and head for the local dirt track

BUT I guess if you were not born then and all you have ever seen is what you see today it is still by far the best racing (by far ) available anywhere today !

NASCAR in the 70 & 80s was over and above greater racing than you see today for many reasons.
1. There were real men driving the machines, not the yapper boys running today.
2. No fuel mileage races like the joke last week on the road course. At the end of the race drivers should be talking about the moves they made to get ahead not turning off their engines or riding the clutch to save fuel!
3. COT is also a joke. Racing is about finding how to go faster not 10 miles an hour slower. I went the Phoenix race earlier this year and it was very noticable the difference in speed...a sleeper! FYI - IRL two years ago were running 35 to 40 mph faster than NASCAR.
4. Two races at California...boring.

The old NASCAR was much better. Sure the drivers had their differences but they settled them between them, they didnt need NASCAR bureaucrats to do it for them. Today's racing is too constrained, yes Dale Sr. might have not lost his life had he been wearing the Hans device but hey that's what he wanted, he was a REAL NASCAR DRIVER. I wish NASCAR would just let the boys RACE.

I prefer the new safer cars and much better competition.

NASCAR is selling out these days and its about the money more than racing. Cautions where nobody can figure out why. I do not like these.

Ideally Id take the new cars and put them under the older way it was run when NASCAR was about racing 1st.

My hubby really would like to see racing as it was. Years ago ford, chevy would give them the body, but the racers crews had to make their own engine, nothing pre-fabed. They had to use their brains to get the car ready. Racers use to have to use their, eyes, ears, wits not computers and a bunch of spotters. Now a computer can determine the weather , temperature, humidity and tell how much air pressure to put in a tire. That is not using their brains.
However, he is thankfull for the modification in safety.

The racing of today is better. Watch the old races (Back in the day) and drivers are winning by 1,2, 3 or more laps over the 2nd place cars. Real nail biting stuff there.

Some people don't like change. Me? I like air conditioners, cable TV, and computers. We'd have none if not for new technology and change.
