I'ts never wrong to do what you want in your own space ... but if you have 'light blue' walls and a medium blue ceiling, your reliling will appear 'lower' ... unlsee you use a good lighting system that will 'raise' it to the point you won't 'see it' there, but will only 'feel open' on top. Try this 'trick' ... get a 'square' box at least 4x4x4" that you can open. Put an 'eyehole' in the middle of one wall, and a 'light source' similar to the 'windows' in your room in the appropriate wall. Then put up papers on the walls and ceiling in the colors that you want, and look through the 'eye hole' at the 'room' you've just built. You'll see that there are some things you'll like and others you won't like ... but then think of the 'furniture and art' that you'll be putting into that room, and if possible put smaller boxes in representing the furniture. Your 'view' may change dramatically. By using this 'trick' you'll be able to 'see' what your finished room will look like at far less expense than just buying the paint and hoping it will look good ... and it's FUN to do, too, especially if you are a mom with kids who want to see what you are 'doing' and ask WHY ... or if you are young yourself and want to look more responsible.

Dark color on the ceiling will make the ceiling seem even lower than it already is.

It depends on the effect you want. Warm colors draw the object closer, giving a cozy effect, while cool tones recede.
