Not the same thing.

Flea eggs and pupae are microscopic, you can't see them. Flea 'dirt' is flea poo - digested blood. It looks like black flakes, but if you look closer they're sort of spiral or comma shaped.

Where there are flea dirts there are fleas - both on the animal and the house. Your friend needs to get some flea treatment from a vet - not from a petshop though, because they're rubbish.

The best treatment for a new pet is to get a flea bath right away. You can give your pet a flea bath yourself or go to your local groom shop. If you did not do this right away, you will want to treat your house and yard. This is very important since fleas can lay eggs by the thousands. Raid flea spray is the best to treat your house. You can get a flea bomb but you will still need to spray under you furniture as a bug bomb sprays up and out and does not get underneath areas that fleas may harbor. Also treat your car or any area you pet has been, including his bedding. Treat your yard in the spring and summer months when fleas are bad. Seven is a very good product that is pet friendly. I am being on the cautious side, as I have said, fleas multiply quickly and it is best to take all precautions as necessary. I use a product from my local vet. It is Sentinel with flea protection. It not only protects your pet from heart disease but also helps to keep the fleas from invading your pet. If the fleas get really bad, repeat these options until you are sure they are gone. I hope this helps you out.

No. Flea dirt is actually flea excrement. It's really dried blood. If you put it on a white piece of paper and get it wet, you will see it dissolve into the blood it actually is. The flea dirt is eaten by the hatching pupa from the flea eggs.

Both bad.

Addition: I meant eaten by the larvae. The flea doesn't eat in the pupa stage. Sorry about that.

Flea dirt is flea poop, to be blunt about it. It's digested blood. It looks like pepper but if you put some water on it, it will dissolve and turn red.

Flea eggs are colorless or white.
