Not only do they perform surgery, they get to use power tools while doing it.

ALL surgeons have to do more than just operate. They have to diagnose problems, know how to treat the different problems that they find, and care for patients after surgery.

Orthopedic surgeons may also prescribe physical therapy to treat orthopedic conditions, or use things like braces or splints to prevent injury from worsening, so surgery isn't their only tool.

It's just the most fun.

Hey there, I'm going into orthopedic surgery myself. It is a very tough field to get in to. Besides being able to get into and through medical school, you'll have to get really good board scores, letters of rec, do research, publications help but aren't necessary, and rack up some honors during your clinical rotations in med school. So, if you're interested in just sports medicine and not surgery, don't bend your back taking this route. You can do a family medicine or pediatrics residency and then do sports med fellowship (much easier and shorter route) but you won't be able to operate. If you really like to operate, then you'll have to do an ortho residency. Your bread and butter for sports med fellowship after ortho residency (every field has their own) will be shoulder and knee arthroscopy looking for rotator cuff, ACL, and other injuries. If that's what you like, then go for it, but there are other fellowships like trauma, spine, foot & ankle, joint replacement, tumor, stuff like that you can do after an ortho residency, so keep an open mind.

If you specialize in orthopedic surgery, you do the cutting. I'm sure there are orthopedists who do not do surgery themselves, but I've not run into one.
