My state requires all techs to be certified and registered with the state board before working so I did all that back in March and started working at Walgreens at the end of May. I didn't have any work experience but I needed a job that I could support myself with. They offered me $10.75/hr promising full time(30-40 hr). Problem: The only people getting full time are the Sr Techs and the Pharmacists. I've been fighting to get my full time in b/c I need it. They promise I'll get my hours when fall starts b/c it gets busy but one of the girls who started off as full time too is only getting 14 hr next week even after talking to the store manager 4 times! I'm starting college in the fall and wondering if I'm cut out for the retail setting.

So, techs, what're the big differences they don't tell you about between retail and hospital?

If you work in a hospital pharmacy, you will have limited contact with the public if any at all. If you do not want contact with patients and customers and the like, this is the way to go.

Hey I am a pharm. tech working at CVS. I would say that retail stores would certainly give you more hours, depending on how well the store is hired with techs. My store is underemployed, they're always in need of help. So if you have a retail store near by your house, try that out. The diff. between hospital and retail is that in retail, you will learn a lot about drugs, an awful lot of patience with the patients and a lot of responsibility. Hospital, everything will stay the same except learning more about drugs and interaction with people/patients. Good luck!..I hope this helped :)
