Because we want to know what we are talking about when the bible is thrown at us. Discredit, no. There is proof he existed and there are good messages in the book. To people like me who like to think for themselves, take all religions into consideration. I am not an atheist and I am not a christian.

First time I read the Bible, I believed in God.

Also, if people are going to try to make social policy and laws that effect me, then I need to discredit the bible.

I don't care what you believe. But If you believe that my sister should not have access to the HPV vaccine because your religion (which I don't believe) says that non-marital sex should have consequences, then we have a problem. If you believe Intelligent Design, which requires a beliefe in a Creator and religion, should be taught in schools because of your religion, then we have aproblem. If you make homophobic speach based solely on the Bible, then we have a problem.

You wouldn't want to ban the sale of certain foods simply because someone else's sacred scripture says it's wrong, would you? And I do not want Christian "morality" to be incorporated into preventative legsislation by my government.

Mom's father was a Baptist pastor, so I had the Bible forced upon me since birth. I had no choice but to attend church every Sunday and to read the Bible every day. I began to see errors in it by age 7, but I did not dare to tell Mom or Dad. In college, I minored in Philosophy, and my main professor was an atheist who criticized religions. To try to be fair, I took Bible History. I have not read the Bible for years, but I recall much of it, and I have tyrannical relatives who try to force their religion upon me. If someone starts a quarrel, I defend myself. You are distorting things, as Christians habitually do. I am a philosopher, so I am concerned with truth. If someone believes nonsense, it is my duty to tell him so, just as Christians try to spread their ideas. What is fine for them is fine for us atheists. Why not let me just not believe?

Usually before we turned atheist we had to read the bible, and we are just using examples from what we read back in the days

I read the Bible to confirm why I don' believe. If you want to believe, fine. But, when you ask an atheist to explain his/her point of view, expect to be shown how the Bible and Christian thought is illogical.

I just let people believe whatever they want, and treat the Bible like an ordinary piece of literature.

How can you truly believe anything without research? Are you that simple minded that you just accept everything that is told to you? You would be the person thousands of years ago believing that the earth was flat, why? Because someone told you it was. Doubt and proof are natural reactions in life, it separates us from the other sheep like yourself.

Because of the horrific damage done to the world by people who believe in your god.

For example: More americans are killed every year by christian opposition to medical research and education than by terrorism.

Please read Letter to a Christian Nation for more.

I cannot discredit what has no credit. Why not just let people believe? For one delusional irrational people start huge wars. As proven throughout history. For two delusional irrational people want to force their silly beliefs on every one else. For three why don't you just pray to your god for the answer?
