Would it be appropriate to ask people who are invited to bring a covered dish, appetizer or desert to a retirement party/pig roast?

A friend's son just became a state police officer and to celebrate, they held a picnic for him and asked everyone to bring something.

My dad retires in less than 3 months and we were going to have a huge pig roast for a picnic as well as include a retirement celebration. Other than the pig, we were going to provide the cake and beverages.

I think it is a great idea. I never mind bringing along a dish to a picnic or other gathering. That way there is a huge variety of food as well as people can bring their favorite dish. Another thing I think you should provide is the paper plates (get the good thick ones!) and plastic silverware. You might also add in some dinner rolls since most people bring salads, vegetables, desserts and not breads. That is a wonderful idea. Congratulations to your Dad. Tell him "Thank you" for keeping us safe all these years.

Am I the only who sees the humor in a pig roast for a retiring police officer...To answer your question, simply state that covered dishes are welcomed. Most people will bring something.

Krispy Creme donuts and vodka! Seriously though try twice baked potatoes, this seems to be a favorite and it easy as well twice baked potatoes. Boil potatoes for 45min, until cooked but not too mushy. Mash the potatoes Whip the potatoes with some butter and/or sour cream Add cheese, peppers, onions, the kitchen sink, whatever! Plop the entire mass into a baking dish and bake for an hour or put into individual baking cups, cupcake cups, and top with more cheese and bake for 45min. Two hours of your time and the office will stare at it funny until someone takes the plunge and takes the first bite and then it will be gone! Top Roman works too!
