What is Reno like. My usual destinations tend to be a bit upscale and tastefull. If you have been there any suggestions on where to stay, what to do and what to avoid. We would be doing the Reno bit in conjunction with a visit to San Francisco and wine country.
Thanks for all replies...appreciate your input!

Reno is pretty nice. There are plenty of upscale hotels. The last answerer stayed at Circus Circus. Big mistake! I have been to Reno and loved it. Good food, good shows, and lots of gambling. The scenery in the area is beautiful and you are not to far away from Lake Tahoe. Go, you will have a great time.

Its like a slightly smaller and little seedier version of Vegas.

I went there last year around Christmas for 2 nights. We stayed at Circus Circus. The food was pretty bad, but the room was very nice and really cheap (75$/night) compared to other places. Its quite family friendly (lots of games for kids). Also we went skiing at Mt. Rose (30 mins drive) which was a lot of fun.

I'd avoid the casino (full of roughnecks), although I did win 40$ at roulette. All in all it was a lot of fun.

If you're looking for slightly rustic wine areas near SF you might also want to check out Amador county and Mendocino.

Reno is basically Atlantic City without the beach.
